Listening comprehension is a fundamental building block of reading comprehension development. The widely cited “simple view of reading” suggests that reading is a function of two key components: decoding and listening comprehension (see Figure 5.3).18 Differences in students' reading comprehension performance can be largely predicted by their decoding skills (the process of translating text into pronounceable words) and listening comprehension skills (the ability to make meaning from language). Decoding and listening are necessary, but neither is sufficient alone for a student to be a good reader.

We have ways to measure decoding and listening comprehension separately, so we can look at these different components to better understand a student's reading comprehension scores. In reading, if a student has weak decoding skills but average listening comprehension the child could be struggling with dyslexia. A student who has average decoding skills and weak listening comprehension skills might be considered a “poor comprehender.” Both are poor readers, but for different reasons. If a student is weak in both areas, the student is known as a “garden variety poor reader” (see Figure 5.4).
